Kadri Gürsel, winner of the SEEMO Human Rights Award 2017

Kadri Gürsel, born 1961, journalist and columnist from Turkey is the winner of the SEEMO Human Rights Award 2017.

Gürsel started working in 1986. He was journalist in Yeni Gündem (newspaper was closed in 1988), Günes, Cumhuriyet and Sabah. He worked from 1993-1997 as Agence French-Presse (AFP ) correspondent for Istanbul. In March 1995, while working as AFP correspondent, he was kidnapped for 26 days by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). He started to work for the Milliyet newspaper group in 1997. He worked as foreign news desk editor in Milliyet from 1999–2008

In October 2016 Gürsel and his colleagues from Cumhuriyet newspaper were taken into custody for allegedly being linked to terror groups . An Istanbul court ordered the release of Gürsel on 25 September 2017. In 2019, Gürsel started a political show on Medyascope (political news on YouTube).

Welcome!

South East European Region has always been the most vivid area of the old continent. It is the base of the question “where Europe begins and ends”. Istanbul is the right place to discuss this from the point of view of the media. As the idea of Europe has changed and transformed the media took its part in this transformation. The media in this region has evolved and transferred itself into new states immensely rapid. In some places and for some media it meant dissolve, for others fade-out or fade-in.  

Media is a sphere of several tools experienced on both side of the content providers and recipients: It needs energy in the air, limitless passion to think, to write, to answer, to capture and disseminate. How are we experiencing this change in the Southeastern Europe? Where do our ways intersect with the media?  Who are the new content providers? What happened to the old ones? What happened on the side of reader / of audience?  

Public relations and user friendly applications try to maintain the capacity of the media legacies and their transformation into the new media environment. This change on one side causes losses but brings fortunes for others on the other side.  What are these opportunities? The number of Internet and smart phone users in South East European region is an emerging market, Turkey is prevailing. Not only on the side of the end-users but also as creative content providers. Especially in journalism, music, videogames and others.  

Towards the end of 2012, let’s sum up all these questions make a list and discuss them at Kadir Has University, at the shores of Golden Horn.  

Journalism will be the center of our Media Days 2012 integrating old and new media. Professional perspectives- with contributions of newspapers, both private and public TV, PR landscape, the news making and analysis on and about Syria, TV Series and their prevalence in recent years.  

With the participation of journalists and online journalists, bloggers, columnists, other media and content providers, academics, industry and consultants from the South East European and European region we aim to create the most up to date atmosphere and put the agenda for the Media Days for 2013.

The Vienna-based South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO), an affiliate of the International Press Institute (IPI), is set tomorrow to kick off its annual conference dedicated to investigative reporting, The III South, East and Central Europe Investigative Journalism Days, in Chisinau, Moldova.

The conference is scheduled to take place from May 23 to 25 with the financial support of the Austrian Development Cooperation agency and in cooperation with the European Association of Regional Television (CIRCOM) and the Chisinau-based daily Ziarul de Garda.

The conference, focusing on different aspects of reporting on corruption and crime, will be inaugurated by Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat. The opening ceremony will also include SEEMO Secretary General Oliver Vujovic, CIRCOM Regional Training Project Manager Karol Cioma, Boris Bergant from the European Broadcasting Union-Special Assistance Project (EBU-SAP), Ziarul de Garda Director Alina Radu, Gerhard Schaumberger from the Austrian Development Agency in Chisinau and EBU Vice President Claudio Cappon.

Renowned international speakers, who are experts in investigative reporting, will cover a series of topics including technology and advanced investigative techniques in the coverage of corruption and organised crime, as well as editorial policies on investigations into crime and corruption.

Paul Christian Radu, executive director of the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project from Bucharest, Romania will moderate a panel on technology and advanced investigative techniques related to reporting on corruption and organised crime. Tony O’Shaughnessy, an experienced international journalist and trainer who served as a current affairs series editor for the BBC and who is currently involved with CIRCOM’s video journalism and documentary courses, will focus on “Approaching investigative journalism within a current affairs program series – the editorial decisions to be made”.

Marek Wollner, head and host of the investigative program Reporteri CT, broadcast by the Pubic RTV in the Czech Republic, will hold a panel on investigative reporting on public television. Finally, Blaz Zgaga, a freelance reporter from Slovenia and a co-author of the three-part investigative trilogy “In the Name of the State” focusing on arms smuggling during the 1990s Balkan conflicts, will speak about his investigation.

More than 100 national and international journalists are expected to attend.

The III South, East and Central Europe Investigative Journalism Days will be inaugurated at 18.00 on May 23 in the Codru Conference Halls in Chisinau.

The first South, East and Central Europe Investigative Journalism Days took place in Budva, Montenegro in 2010. The second took place in Belgrade, Serbia in 2011.

Serbian Photographer Wins SEEMO Human Rights Photo Award

The South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO) announced that Serbian journalist Igor Pavicevic won the 2012 SEEMO Human Rights Photo Award. The winning photograph, “Ručak na barikadi”, (Lunch at the Barricades), shot on Sep. 18, 2011, in Jarinje, Kosovo, was selected by the SEEMO jury, headed by Radomir Licina (Danas daily, Belgrade, Serbia).

Pavicevic works as a photojournalist for the Belgrade-based Press daily. He has previously worked for different publications, including Balkan and Internacional. Pavicevic was handed the award on May 17, 2012, during a ceremony and exhibition organized by the Beta news agency. The SEEMO Human Rights Award is part of the Beta Photo Award Competition. BETA has been organising this photo competition since 2004 and SEEMO has participated for the past five years with its special award.

The winners of the 2012 Beta Photo Award are: Sanja Knezevic, Amnesty International, Serbia; Vadim Ghirda, AP, Romania; and Milos Cvetkovic, Blic, Serbia. A special award for best sports photograph, sponsored by Telekom, went to Bulgarian photographer Kostadin Andonov.

DR. ERHARD BUSEK SEEMO AWARD FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING IN SOUTH EAST EUROPE 2018 TO REMZI LANI

The Vienna-based South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO) has announced on 29 November 2018 that Remzi Lani, founder and director of the Albanian Media Institute, is the winner of the 2018 Dr. Erhard Busek – SEEMO Award for Better Understanding in South East Europe.

An international SEEMO jury chose Lani, who has a long career in journalism and media development. He worked for many media, like Zeri i Rinise (Tirana), El Mundo (Madrid), Zeri (Pristina) Alternative Information Network (AIM) etc. He was co-editor of the Albanian edition of Foreign Policy Magazine. He is an author of various articles on Balkan affairs for international and regional magazines.

Lani was chosen for his longstanding media work in South East Europe, supporting development of media, media professionalism, and better cooperation between journalists in the SEEMO region. Lani was since end of the 80´ promoting press freedom in his country and the region and also constantly supported the work of minority media and the development of investigative journalism in the South East Europe.

He is one of the founders of the South East Europe Media Organisation. He is also one of the founders of a network of media centers and media institutes in South East Europe.

Lani is member of European Council for Foreign Relations ; Member of the Steering Committee of GFMD (Global Forum for Media Development); Member of the Board of WAN-IFRA (World Association of Newspapers).

Lani worked as media expert in Yemen, Mozambique, Zimbabve, Zambia, Namibia, South Africa, Zwaziland, Bostwana, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Armenia etc.

He was guest lecturer at Klagenfurt University (Austria), Otawa University (Canada), Windhoek Politechnic (Namibia). He worked as expert for the International Commission on the Balkans (2004).

The award, which carries a cash prize of €2,500, is scheduled to be presented on 29 November 2018 (16.15 ) in Krems, Austria (IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems, Am Campus Trakt G1, 3500 Krems an der Donau) by Dr. Erhard Busek, president of the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM), and by Oliver Vujovic, SEEMO secretary general.

The Vienna-based South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO) has announced on 5 November 2019 that Boro Kontić, journalist and director of Media Center Sarajevo, is the winner of the 2019 Dr. Erhard Busek – SEEMO Award for Better Understanding in South East Europe.

Kontić, born 1955, was chosen for his longstanding media work in South East Europe, supporting development of media, media diversity, media professionalism, and better cooperation between journalists in the SEEMO region.

He started his journalistic career on Radio Sarajevo (1979) as a host of the live radio broadcast called “Primus”. In a later analysis “Primus” was estimated to be one of the most significant media project in former Yugoslavia. “Primus” was a basis for the young authors from Sarajevo who were recognized as creators of “Surrealists’ a specific movement in arts and media with broader cultural and social implications.

Later (1987) he created “Youth program” as a platform for the new radio voices. Between 1990 and 1992 he was editor-in-chief of the Radio Sarajevo, II program.

During his radio career Boro Kontić won Grand Prix of two remarkable world festivals of radio authors for his documentary “Jazztime”: Prix Futura – Berlin and Prix Italia (1991). As a co-author in the radio documentary “Sniper” with colleagues from Danish Radio, he won another Prix Italia (1993).

During the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and siege of Sarajevo(1992-1996) he reported for BH Radio and Voice of America.

Since 1995 he has worked as a director of the Media center in Sarajevo.

Kontić is author and producer of numerous documentaries. Among them “Years eaten by lions” about journalism and hate speech in ex – Yugoslavia between 1991 and 1995.

Dr. Erhard Busek – SEEMO Award for Better Understanding in South East Europe, which carries a cash prize of €2,000, is scheduled to be presented during the South East Europe Media Forum (SEEMF) on 5 November 2019 (16:00 – 16:15) in Hotel Internacional in Zagreb (Croatia), by Dr. Erhard Busek, president of the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM), by Samra Luckin from SEEMO Bosnia and Herzegovina and by Oliver Vujovic, SEEMO secretary general.

The CEI and the South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO) have announced the winners of the “CEI SEEMO Award for Outstanding Merits in Investigative Journalism 2019”: Ermin Zatega (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Mubarek Asani (North Macedonia) in the section “Professional Journalists” and Arlis Alikaj (Albania) in the section “Young Professional Journalists”.

Ermin Zatega and Mubarek Asani work at the Center for Investigative Journalism (CIN) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The award is meant to recognise their contribution to the investigative journalism in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkan region, especially for the impact that their teamwork stories had on society in a challenging environment. In particular, they have been working on a cross-border environment investigation on the hazardous waste produced by Tuzla chemical companies and which have not been dismantled properly. Their stories have contributed to awareness raising, also at the European level, of the environmental problems in Tuzla affecting the entire region.

Arlis Alikaj has been working on a new story dealing with illegal logging in Albania’s biggest national park, Shebenik-Jabllanice, a world heritage site protected by UNESCO. This award is meant to acknowledge his courageous reporting and the importance of the work of young local journalists. During his work, Alikaj had to face many challenges including harassment and threats.

Ermin Zatega, Mubarek Asani and Arlis Alikaj officially received the CEI SEEMO Award on the occasion of the South East Europe Media Forum (SEEMF) taking place in Zagreb, Croatia on 4-5 November 2019.

A Special Mention was assigned to Jagoda Bastalic from Croatia, for her independent work in investigative journalism and in-depth professional reporting made for the public broadcasting company Croatian Radiotelevision (Hrvatska radiotelevizija – HRT). She addressed an unknown problem in the Obrovac natural area, where an investor had planned to build a waste grit treatment plant in a shipyard which was not treating waste according to the regulations and having catastrophic effects for the environment.

The jury also decided to bestow a special mention to Dina Djordjevic for her contribution, as young journalist working in a team with Vladimir Kostic, in investigating important environmental topics in her country, Serbia, while facing threats and several challenges.

This year the Award had a special focus on environmental issues. 23 nominations, covering 11 countries, have been submitted, confirming the region-wide impact and relevance of the Award.
