19.04.2023 – DIHA reporter Abdulkadir Turay to remain in custody for additional three months

Abdulkadir Turay, a reporter for the now-defunct Dicle News Agency (DİHA) , was arrested on 9 May 2016 and charged with aiding and abetting a terrorist organisation.

According to information form BIANET he appeared in March 2023 before the administration and observation Board. The board decided to extend his imprisonment with three months.

Turay was among several persons arrested 2016 under suspicion of terrorism. He was sentenced to nine years in prison by 2nd High Court in Mardin, Turkey.

DIHA was one of the media shut down by the authorities after the July 2016 coup d’état attempt . DİHA started to work in April 2002.

Hamdullah Bayram, working for the the pro-Kurdish Yeni Yaşam newspaper, was according to BIANET taken into custody on 16 March this year . Bayram had an arrest warrant against him and was detained in the scope of the investigation of eleven journalists who were detained in raids in October 2023 in Ankara, Turkey. The journalists are accused of being a member of the forbidden Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The indictment in the case consists of 210 pages. The trial against the Kurdish media workers will be heard before a criminal court in Ankara, starting on 16 May 2023. The 11 journalists are facing are up to 15 years in prison.

Kyrgyz administration launched in the past months activities against free media and civil society.

The actions include targeting Azattyk, the Kyrgyz branch of RFE/RL, through website access blocks, fines, and the freezing of bank accounts and as result Azzattyk can not pay financial obligations. Using technical problems as explanation, the National RTV Corporation stopped transmitting radio shows produced by Azattyk.

Independent journalists in Kyrgyzstan have been blamed for promoting an LGBT agenda and that they are financed by “western money” and from “organsations in West Europe and USA”.

In 2022 President Sadyr Nurgojoyevich Japarov / Zhaparov /, ratified the law “Protecting from Inaccurate Information”, which helps the state to block webpages.

Also last year Kaktus.media was acussed for
propaganda and starting a conflict. Several staff members were invited for questioning at the state prosecutor’s office.

In March 2022, Taalay Duyshenbiyev, the director of the Next TV, was arrested and charged under Article 330 of the Kyrgyz Republic Criminal Code

In September 2022 officials submitted draft amendments to the Law on Mass Media (Проект Закона Кыргызской Республики «О средствах массовой информации).

On 23 November 2022 a court in Bishkek decided to expel investigative journalist Bolot Temirov from Kyrgyzstan and deported him to Russia.

14.04.2023 – Belarusian Journalist Sentenced to Three Years in Penitentiary For Writing About Fatal State Security Officials Raid

On Thursday 23 March 2023 the City Court in Minsk, Belarus, sentenced Gennady Nikolayevich Mozheyko (Генадзь Мікалаевіч Мажэйка /Gennady Nikolayevich Mazheyka) a former reporter for Komsomolskaya Pravda to three years penitentiary for inciting social hatred and insulting Belarus President Alyaksandr Ryhoravich Lukashenka .

The charges against Mazheyka were related to his article and comments posted on social media about a shooting in Minsk in late September 2021 in which an IT worker and a state security official died. The article was removed from the newspaper’s web quickly. After this incident Komsomolskaya Pravda closed its office in Belarus.

Marta Jančkárová, who hosts the weekly debate show Sobotné Dialógy (Saturday Dialogues) for the national public broadcaster RTVS in Bratislava, has received threats.

She received the first threat via e-mail and phone after the airing of Sobotné Dialógy on 18 February 2023. The guest was Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová. New threats came after the airing on 25 February, when RTVS refused to allow Smer member of parliament Ľuboš Blaha to participate. He came to RTVS uninvited instead of the chair of foreign affairs parliamentary committee and Smer member of the parliament Marián Kéry.

According to Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS) over 70% of female journalists in Serbia are considering a job change, and every third one has experienced discrimination. The study highlights issues such as unequal pay, lack of job security, and limited opportunities for advancement, as reasons for the high level of dissatisfaction among women in the field.

Today 24 years ago, on 11 April 1999, Slavko Curuvija, owner of the newspaper “Dnevni Telegraf” and the weekly magazine “Evropljanin”, was killed in front of his home in the center of Belgrade, Serbia. The article headlined “Curuvija welcomes the bombs”, was published in the Serbian daily “Politika ekspres” on 6 April 1999, five days before journalist Slavko Curuvija was killed. According to different sources, this article was ordered by Mirjana Markovic, wife of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic. Leading regime and state-controlled media quoted in a campaign against Curuvija the article. Till today the legal process against the attackers and former members of the state security is not closed.

As published in https://zurnal.info/ on 22 February 2023 a member of the local Assembly of Zenica-Doboj Canton, warned on 21 February 2023 in front of the Municipal Court building in Sarajevo journalist Amarildo Gutić in a threatening, angry voice to “stop writing about his children”. The threats were made ahead of the hearing regarding the lawsuit that this local politician initiated against Žurnal.info.
