According to Yavaş, he was invited to a meeting, that allegedly ended up with a physical attack and death threats. Yavaş, who was not seriously injured, filed a criminal complaint following the incident.

The head of the ultra-right party allegedly accused Yavaş of provoking the incident. Yavaş denied these allegations.

15.05.2023 – Journalist Tetyana Tsyrulnik assaulted during coverage of Victory Day commemorations in Ukraine

On Tuesday 9 May,2023 journalist Tetyana Tsyrulnik ( Тетяна Цирульник) was assaulted while covering Victory Day commemorations (меморіалі Солдатської Слави) in the Ukrainian city of Poltava.

Tsyrulnik, who is the Editor-in-Chief of local news website Kolo.news (Коло), was pushed and slapped by a man who objected to her taking photographs.
She reported the incident to police and received a medical examination for minor injuries to her face. Ukrainian authorities have opened a criminal case for “threats or violence against a journalist” and the perpetrator has been identified. In the video on “Свобода Слова” it can be seen that Tsyrulnik was taking a photo, and a man pounced on her with words “Чуєш, курво, йди звідси!, began to push her out, then hit her in the face . Subsequently, Tsyrulnik faced further harassment as other individuals at the event downplayed the severity of the attack and made derogatory comments. Some even went as far as to suggest that the incident was not significant.. Tsyrulnik also reported being chased by an unidentified man who demanded to know her last name. The police intervened and asked him to leave.

The incident underscores the hostile environment in which journalists work in Ukraine and the need for better protection of press freedom.

Milovan Brkić, the editor-in-chief of Tabloid, was arrested on Monday 8 May 2023 in his apartment in Belgrade, Serbia, according to Predrag Popović, the deputy editor of the magazine.

Media reports suggest that Brkić allegedly made several insults and threats against President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić at a protest in Belgrade on Monday 8 May 2023.

11.05.2023 – AFP Journalist Arman Soldin, Dies in Rocket Attack near Bakhmut

Arman Soldin (32), a Bosnian-born French journalist, was killed while reporting in Chasiv Yar near Bakhmut, Ukraine on Tuesday 9 May 2023.

Soldin worked for Agence France-Presse (AFP) as a video coordinator and was accompanying Ukrainian soldiers in the area, which is known for heavy fighting.

A rocket attack by Russian forces struck the group, hitting Soldin and killing him. None of the other members of the reporting crew were injured. Soldin had been reporting from the front line in Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 24 February 2022, and was the agency’s lead video reporter at the time of his death.

The attack occurred around 4.30pm approximately 10 km from Ukrainian frontline positions in Bakhmut, which has been the site of ongoing battles between Ukrainian and Russian forces for the past nine months. The reporting crew had a security adviser with them at the time of the attack.

Soldin, who was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 1991,
came with12 months to France in 1992.

Since the start of the new Russian invasion in Ukraine in 2022, at least 14 media workers, including Soldin, have lost their lives, according to the South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO) – the list of killed journalist is visible on www.seemo.org.

10.05.2023 – Three Imprisoned Iranian Female Journalists Awarded U.N. Press Freedom Prize

Three Iranian female journalists have been awarded the UNESCO – Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize for their commitment to reporting the truth and seeking accountability.

The award ceremony was held on 2 May 2023 in New York, USA.

Niloofar Hamedi, who works for the leading reformist daily newspaper Shargh and Elaheh Mohammadi, who works for reformist newspaper Ham-Mihan, reported about the death and funeral of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was being held by the morality police for wearing her headscarf too loosely. The news led to months-long protests across Iran.

Hamedi and Mohammadi were named as two of 100 Most Influential People of 2023 by the Time Magazine. Both have been detained in the Evin Prison in Iran since September 2022.

Narges Mohammadi, a prominent journalist and activist, was also awarded for her work in the field of press freedom. She is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence in Evin Prison and is reporting from prison and published interviews with other women prisoners in her book “White Torture”.

The UNESCO prize is named after Guillermo Cano, a Colombian journalist who was assassinated in 1986.
