DR. ERHARD BUSEK SEEMO AWARD FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING IN SOUTH EAST EUROPE 2018 TO REMZI LANI

The Vienna-based South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO) has announced on 29 November 2018 that Remzi Lani, founder and director of the Albanian Media Institute, is the winner of the 2018 Dr. Erhard Busek – SEEMO Award for Better Understanding in South East Europe.

An international SEEMO jury chose Lani, who has a long career in journalism and media development. He worked for many media, like Zeri i Rinise (Tirana), El Mundo (Madrid), Zeri (Pristina) Alternative Information Network (AIM) etc. He was co-editor of the Albanian edition of Foreign Policy Magazine. He is an author of various articles on Balkan affairs for international and regional magazines.

Lani was chosen for his longstanding media work in South East Europe, supporting development of media, media professionalism, and better cooperation between journalists in the SEEMO region. Lani was since end of the 80´ promoting press freedom in his country and the region and also constantly supported the work of minority media and the development of investigative journalism in the South East Europe.

He is one of the founders of the South East Europe Media Organisation. He is also one of the founders of a network of media centers and media institutes in South East Europe.

Lani is member of European Council for Foreign Relations ; Member of the Steering Committee of GFMD (Global Forum for Media Development); Member of the Board of WAN-IFRA (World Association of Newspapers).

Lani worked as media expert in Yemen, Mozambique, Zimbabve, Zambia, Namibia, South Africa, Zwaziland, Bostwana, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Armenia etc.

He was guest lecturer at Klagenfurt University (Austria), Otawa University (Canada), Windhoek Politechnic (Namibia). He worked as expert for the International Commission on the Balkans (2004).

The award, which carries a cash prize of €2,500, is scheduled to be presented on 29 November 2018 (16.15 ) in Krems, Austria (IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems, Am Campus Trakt G1, 3500 Krems an der Donau) by Dr. Erhard Busek, president of the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM), and by Oliver Vujovic, SEEMO secretary general.

– Jeta Xharra (Kosovo) director of the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN), as well as a presenter on, and the editor-in-chief of, “Life in Kosovo”;

– Drago Hedl, (Croatia) journalist, Zagreb-based daily Jutarnji List;

– Omer Karabeg (Bosnia and Herzegovina), journalist, South Slavic and Albanian Language Service program of Radio Free Europe (RFE/RL), founder and editor of the radio program Most (Bridge), Prague, Czech Republic;

DR. ERHARD BUSEK – SEEMO 2018 AWARD

The South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO), calls for nominations for the 2018 Dr Erhard Busek-SEEMO Award for Better Understanding in South, Eastern and Central Europe. Eligible to be nominated are journalists, editors, media executives, media experts, writers or journalism trainers in South, East and Central Europe, who have contributed to promoting better understanding in the region and have worked towards ending minority-related problems, ethnic divisions, racism, xenophobia, gender discrimination, homophobia, etc. The winner will be awarded EUR 2,500.

The award is sponsored by Dr. Erhard Busek, former Vice-Chancellor of Austria, Jean Monnet Professor ad personam, President of the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe, Coordinator of the Southeast European Cooperative Initiative (SECI) and Former Special Coordinator of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe.

The deadline for applications is 15 October 2018 noon (12.00) Central European Time. All application materials must be received by the deadline.

Additional materials: please include a document in word or pdf with a list of the candidate’s merits; information about the media outlet(s) that have published and/or broadcast the candidate’s work; relevant material, including copies of articles (jpg), word or pdf document with links to newspaper article / webpage / video / radio material / you tube or other webpage. For bigger files (more than 1 MB) please use a webtransfer / Google drive (please send the link to the document / file and permission to view and download the document / file) and send in a word document or pdf the link.

Video, audio and print material in local languages should be accompanied by a short synopsis in English. If materials are available online, please send a document that lists the relevant links as supporting material.

The winner will be chosen by an international jury composed of distinguished journalists and media experts. Members of the jury cannot be nominated for the award.

An official press release in November 2018 will announce the winner.

The award will be presented on 29 November 2018 in Austria. Travel and hotel expenses of the winner to the presentation will be covered.
