World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993. Two years earlier, on 3 May 1991 the Windhoek Declaration for the Development of a Free, Independent and Pluralistic Press was produced by African newspaper journalists at the UNESCO seminar, “Promoting an Independent and Pluralistic African Press,” held in Windhoek, Namibia. The date of the Declaration’s adoption, 3 May, has later on been declared as World Press Freedom Day.
