18.12.2023 – SEEMO Condemns Disturbing Rape Threats Against Journalists in Montenegro

The South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO) strongly condemns the threats directed at female colleagues from various media outlets in Montenegro and urges the police and prosecutor to urgently investigate all cases.

The threats were directed to journalists Mirka Dević (editor Gradska televizija), Danica Nikolić (M portal editor), Tamara Nikčević (freelancer), Bojana Dabović (Gradska televizija) and Slavica Kruščić Vasović (author of TV show “Mostovi” in the public TV RTCG). The gravity of the situation is amplified as it targets female journalists with explicit rape threats, constituting a mass threat against five women. Immediate action from authorities is imperative to halt this alarming situation.

This incidentd highlights the urgent need for concrete measures to ensure the safety and protection of journalists, particularly female journalists, who face specific challenges in the media landscape in Montenegro. SEEMO stands in solidarity with the affected journalists and reiterates its commitment to defending press freedom and journalists’ right to carry out their duties without fear of reprisals.
