Freedom for Journalists Congresscelebrated on 3 May 2011 in Istanbul, gathered more than one hundred journalists from Turkey, representatives from major international press freedom organizations, including the South East Europe Media Organisation, as well as the Representative on Freedom of the Media of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
Congress participants demanded that all imprisoned journalists should be freed -organizations have different estimates as to how many journalists are currently in prison-and called for the amendment of different laws used to prosecute media representatives. While during the morning session, representatives of international press freedom organizations pledged support to their Turkish colleagues, during the afternoon sessions, relatives of the detainees spoke about their loved ones and explained their cases. “We are happy with this congress because we managed to gather representatives of diverse ideologies under one roof,” said Ferai Tinc, journalist and member of the umbrella organization Freedom for Journalists Platform.
